No physical asset is a guaranteed store of value, but the factors that support value retention are well understood: rarity, quality, provenance and liquidity of the secondary market.
For gold, investment-grade bars and coins from recognised refiners trade in transparent markets. For diamonds, natural stones with major laboratory reports in the D–J colour and VVS–VS clarity range have performed consistently.
