Rarity and provenance
Natural diamonds form over billions of years under extreme geological conditions. That rarity is part of what collectors pay for. Lab-grown stones are chemically identical but produced in weeks — supply is effectively unlimited.
The market has priced this distinction rapidly. Lab-grown prices have fallen by more than 70% since 2020 while natural stones in the investment-grade range have held or appreciated.
Resale and liquidity
Natural stones — particularly GIA-certified, well-proportioned D–H colour, VVS–VS clarity — trade in a transparent secondary market. Lab-grown stones have limited resale infrastructure and declining trade values.
For jewellery worn without financial intent, lab-grown offers excellent value. For a position held as a store of value, the choice remains natural.
